How many shingles do I need for a shed? (8x8 to 12x16 chart)
4 bundles for a 10 x 10 ft shed at 4:12 and 8 for a 12 x 16 ft shed at 6:12, with 10% waste and 3 bundles per square (IKO, "How Many Square Feet in a Bundle of Shingles", 19 July 2023, read 2026-09-20). A shed roof is under three squares, so most of the order is one bundle up or down: the footprint times the pitch multiplier gives the roof area, and a 10 x 10 ft gable at 4:12 is 105 sq ft of roof, 1.05 squares, 4 bundles. The charts give bundles, underlayment, ridge cap, nails and drip edge for 8 x 8 ft to 12 x 16 ft sheds at 4:12 and 6:12, all computed by the same code as the calculator.

How to count shingles for a shed
Roof area = footprint (edge to edge, overhang included) x the pitch multiplier; squares = roof area / 100; bundles = squares x (1 + waste) x 3, rounded up. The three bundles per square is how standard 3-tab and architectural shingles are packed (Owens Corning, Section 07 31 13 specification guide, 2013, TruDefinition Oakridge shingles, read 2026-09-20); the 10% waste is the IKO figure for a simple gable (IKO, Blueprint for Roofing, read 2026-09-20); the multiplier is the square root of 1 + (rise / 12)², 1.054 at 4:12 and 1.118 at 6:12. On a shed the rounding matters more than the pitch: the charts round to the bundle you buy, and the roof shingle calculator takes your own width, length, overhang and pitch.

Overhang, lean-to sheds and 3-tab
The charts use the footprint of the shed with no overhang. Most sheds have some: add it to every side before you look up the row, so a 10 x 12 ft shed with a 6 in overhang is 11 x 13 ft on the roof, 143 sq ft of footprint. A lean-to (one slope) has the same area as a gable of the same footprint and pitch, no ridge, and a rake on both ends; skip the ridge cap. 3-tab shingles take the same 3 bundles per square, so the bundle counts hold; only the nails change, at 80 shingles per square instead of 64. - How many bundles of shingles for a 10 x 10 shed?
- 4 bundles at 4:12 (105 sq ft of roof, 1.05 squares x 1.1 waste x 3 = 3.48, rounded up) and 4 at 6:12 (112 sq ft). That is the 10 x 10 ft footprint with no overhang; a 6 in overhang all round makes it 11 x 11 ft, so measure the roof edge to edge, not the walls.
- How many shingles do I need for an 8 x 12 shed?
- 4 bundles at 4:12: 96 sq ft of footprint is 101 sq ft of roof, 1.01 squares, and 3.34 bundles before rounding. In shingles that is 65 architectural shingles laid (64 per square) plus the waste; a bundle of Oakridge holds about 21 shingles (64 / 3).
- How many bundles for an 8 x 8 shed?
- 3 bundles at 4:12: 64 sq ft of footprint, 67 sq ft of roof, 0.67 squares, 2.23 bundles before rounding up, so most of the third bundle is spare; an 8 x 8 at 6:12 (72 sq ft) still fits in 3.
- Do I need underlayment on a shed roof?

- A little: the multiplier is 1.054 at 4:12 and 1.118 at 6:12, so the 6:12 roof has 6% more surface. On a 10 x 16 ft shed that is 169 against 179 sq ft, 6 and 6 bundles. Measure the rise over 12 in of run on a rafter and the roof pitch calculator converts it, or a rise and run in any unit, to x:12.
