A 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6:12 is 2,236 sq ft of roof, 22.4 squares, and takes 74 bundles with 10% waste. The rule and where it comes from
A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof surface. Standard asphalt shingles, 3-tab and architectural alike, are packed so that three bundles cover one square: Owens Corning Supreme 3-tab "3 bundles of 26, 27, 27 shingles" for "100.0 sq ft", TruDefinition Oakridge "Bundles per Square: 3" for "98.4 sq ft" (Owens Corning, Section 07 31 13 specification guide, 2013, TruDefinition Oakridge shingles, read 2026-09-20); IKO says the same for its Cambridge, Dynasty and Royal Estate lines at 33.3 sq ft per bundle (IKO, "How Many Square Feet in a Bundle of Shingles", 19 July 2023, read 2026-09-20). Heavier shingles take 4 to 5 bundles per square: Owens Corning Duration Premium 4 bundles of 16, Berkshire 5 bundles of 9; IKO Crowne Slate 4, Armourshake 5. Check the bundle wrapper.
So bundles = roof squares x (1 + waste) x 3, rounded up. The roof squares come from the footprint and the pitch: roof area = footprint (walls plus overhang, on the plan) x the pitch multiplier, and squares = roof area / 100.

Pitch multiplier
The multiplier is the square root of 1 + (rise / 12)²: geometry, not a published figure. Multiply the footprint by it to get the roof surface; the roof pitch calculator converts degrees and rise-and-run into it.

- How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 1,200 sq ft house?
- Roof area = footprint x pitch multiplier, then / 100 for squares, x 1.1 for waste, x 3 for bundles. At 6:12 a 1,200 sq ft footprint is 1,342 sq ft of roof, 13.4 squares, 45 bundles. That is the footprint of the roof (walls plus overhang), not the floor area of a two-storey house; use the calculator with your own footprint and overhang.
- How many square feet does one bundle cover?
- A third of a square, 33.3 sq ft, for standard shingles: Owens Corning Supreme 3-tab covers "100.0 sq ft" per square in "3 bundles of 26, 27, 27 shingles" and Oakridge "98.4 sq ft" in 3 bundles (Owens Corning, Section 07 31 13 Fiberglass-Based Asphalt Shingles specification guide, 2013, Supreme 3-tab shingles, read 2026-09-20). - Three for the common laminated shingles: Owens Corning lists TruDefinition Oakridge as "Bundles per Square: 3" with "Shingles per Square: 64" (Owens Corning, Section 07 31 13 specification guide, 2013, TruDefinition Oakridge shingles, read 2026-09-20). Thicker laminates and designer shingles are heavier, so the maker splits a square into 4 or 5 lighter bundles; the wrapper says how many.
- Why do I need more bundles than squares x 3?
- Waste: the cuts at rakes, hips, valleys and around vents. IKO, Blueprint for Roofing, read 2026-09-20 recommends adding 10 to 15 percent of the area, the low end for a simple gable and the high end for hips and valleys. The chart uses 10%; the calculator changes it with the shape of each section, and you can type your own figure.
- How many bundles for a 10 x 10 shed?
- A 10 x 10 ft footprint is 100 sq ft, one square on the plan; at 4:12 the roof is 105 sq ft and at 6:12 112 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 4 bundles at 4:12 and 4 at 6:12 (3.5 and 3.7 rounded up); add the overhang to the footprint before you multiply.
- Does the chart work for UK roofs?
- Shingles are rare on UK houses; tiles are counted per m². The last table gives the tiles per m² read from the Marley and BMI Redland data sheets and the count for 50, 100 and 150 m² of roof; the roof tile calculator adds waste, battens and ridge tiles for your own roof.
