About RoofTally
RoofTally answers the questions you have before you order roofing materials or talk to a roofer: how big is the roof, and how many bundles, rolls, tiles and battens does it take?
What it is
A free website with 3 roofing calculators, for the US and for the UK:
- Roof shingle calculator: squares, bundles, underlayment, ridge cap, nails, drip edge.
- Roof pitch calculator: x:12, degrees, percent, area multiplier.
- Roof tile calculator (UK): tiles per m², battens, ridge tiles, cost.
Next to them are 8 guides and 1 longer article that work through the common cases with charts. The site went live on .
What it does, and what it does not
It turns a plan size and a pitch into roof area, then into the quantities you buy, using the coverage figures that shingle and tile makers print on their data sheets. Every starting figure shows its source and the date we read it, and you can change any of them. The calculations run in your browser; there is no account, no address form and no quote request.
It is not a roofer, a survey, a quote or a structural assessment. We do not inspect roofs, recommend contractors, sell materials or pass your details to anyone. A roofer still measures the roof, checks the deck and the flashings, and prices the job.
Who operates it
RoofTally is operated by Softmed Labs SRL, a company registered in Romania, which is also the data controller named in the privacy policy. Pages are signed by RoofTally rather than by a named author. The site is independent of the manufacturers, merchants and cost guides it cites: none of them pays us or reviews our pages.
How the figures are checked
The formulas, the documents behind every starting figure, how often we re-read them and the limits of the results are set out in full on How we check.
Software and AI tools
We use software, including AI tools, to help draft pages and to check the arithmetic. The figures themselves are never typed into a page by hand or by a tool: every number in a guide or chart is computed by the calculators' own code from the sourced starting values, and automated tests compare key results with figures worked out by hand from the data sheets before the site is built.
How it is paid for
The calculators are free and stay free. The site is paid for by an optional paid extra, a printable materials list and estimate for a whole roof, sold through Stripe from the calculator pages. There is no advertising, no affiliate link and no paid placement, and we do not sell leads.
Corrections
If a figure is wrong or a source has changed, email hello@rooftally.xyz with the page and what should change. We check it against the source, correct the page and change its dates. Corrections are free.
